Humans and dogs have different communication systems and as a result, there are often misunderstandings between the species. Instead, they communicate via the only means available to them–they growl or snap. I don’t like it.” They can’t reason with a small child to quit pulling their ears or quit crawling on them. They can’t say, “Please don’t do that to me. Simply put, dogs can’t use words to talk to us. The good news is that growling and snapping don’t necessarily mean that worse behavior is inevitable. From a dog’s perspective, there’s always a good reason for aggressive behavior. However, for a dog, they’re simply ways of communicating. To us humans, expressions of canine aggression are unacceptable behaviors. Does this sudden behavior change mean you must rehome him, or worse? Does it mean you have a dominant dog on your hands that you must force to be submissive? What would suddenly make your dog act aggressively? After all, you may have done your research and made sure you adopted the best dog for your family. If you think interactions between a child and your dog are becoming dangerous, take control over the situation immediately.If your dog recently growled or snapped, you may be wondering why. Redirect your dog to a chew, or to a training routine.ĥ. Make sure to correct your dog when he growls and let him know that his behavior is unacceptable. If your dog is around children, they should always be supervised.Ĥ. Do not expose a child to your dog if you think his behavior may escalate. In the end, you are responsible for your dog’s behavior.ģ. If possible, prevent any behavior of children that may cause a potential reaction from your dog. Be sure to pay careful attention to your dog’s behavior, but monitor the behavior of the kids as well. Manage all interactions your dog has with children. Not all dogs will cue discomfort or reactivity.Ģ. Not all cues necessarily exhibit negative behavior. Rule of thumb: When it comes to puppies and children, you must train the puppy on what is acceptable and what is not. It is our duty to keep our dogs and everyone around them happy and safe! In order to imprint training and good behavior, we must be able to understand our dogs and what they are trying to tell us. A dog that growls may be playing, but may also be warning you. It is important to recognize the distinctions between puppies experimenting, and a growl that indicates escalation. At this time, stop the interaction between your puppy and child, and redirect your puppy to something positive like his favorite toy. Instead, they could be heading towards a nip or a bite. Even if growling is “just for fun”, this fun can quickly escalate out of control.įixation, posturing, and raised hackles all indicate that a growling puppy is no longer playing. This is similar to children roughhousing. Puppies often growl at their littermates out of “play”, and occasionally carry that behavior over to people.
